Hate crime spares no one: when it goes unnoticed, unnamed, and unchecked, we are all victims.
On 8 February 2018 the Hate Crimes Working Group will be releasing its five-year report into hate crimes and discrimination in South Africa. With 945 cases, the study is by far the most in-depth view of hate crimes in South Africa to date and its insights come at a crucial time in the development of hate crime legislation. The media are invited to attend.

When: 8 February 2018, 09h30-12h45
Where: Johannesburg Holocaust and Genocide Centre, 1 Duncombe Road, Forest Town

Researchers Juan Nel and Yolanda Mitchell will present a summary of the report that will highlight the nature of hate crime and the impact it has on the victim, the victim’s family and the broader community. They will also discuss their recommendations in terms of monitoring, preventing and responding to hate crime. Reports will be made available at the event.

The Hate Crimes Working Group is a multi-sectoral network of civil society organisations that cover a cross section of vulnerable sectors and people at risk of becoming victims of prejudice-motivated attacks.
